Town of Cumberland Gap

The Town of Cumberland Gap

The historic Town of Cumberland Gap is a true East Tennessee gem. It’s a vibrant community with a hometown feel, made up of good people who love sharing their town with visitors. Residents and small business owners alike pride themselves on treating guests like family and welcoming them to return whenever they’d like.

The town is named for the Cumberland Gap, a historic mountain pass long used by Native Americans and early settlers as a means for easier passage through the mountains. Daniel Boone led a team of frontiersmen through the pass in 1775, making it accessible to more pioneers and eventually becoming famously known as the “Gateway to the West.” Cumberland Gap was later established as a postal town in 1803 and became a stronghold during the Civil War, with several engagements occurring in and around the Gap. The town was officially incorporated in 1907.

Though we remain steadfast in embracing our rich history, we also delight in the many modern luxuries that grace our town today. Cumberland Gap is known for many amenities, including specialty shops, assorted dining options, a plethora of outdoor activities (including over 80 miles of picturesque hiking trails), quaint places to stay, and so much more.
